This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for May 20, 2008:
How to teach an online class!!!
And how much time to devote daily to the site,
and how to release angst when people do not read directions!
LOL

I used to do tech support. I loved trying to get people to follow directions. I was amazed at the inventive ways they could misunderstand.
All I can say is, there's a reason suppositories come with the instruction to remove from wrapper before inserting.
Thanks for the support Rapunzel! I love your last line…LOL…how true! They do not get it in class either, so this is not unusual…by the time everyone gets it, the course will be over!
Ah life…
I taught Junior High for about 15 years, and I used to joke with my colleagues that I needed to get a series of tee-shirts with the things I said repeatedly to the kids printed on them … “Take out your books”, “Put your name on the page”, “Where is your pencil?”, etc. I think we as a society are good at hearing, but not necessarily talented as listeners.
When the Family Guy characters Stewie and Brian opened the Emmy Awards last year, they did a song about how great it was that there was so much garbage on TV because otherwise Americans would have to learn to read. Hang in there. I work in customer service, and my customers don't read any of the instructions I email them. I could cope by drinking, but I gave up drinking a few years ago, so now I do healthier things like jogging, meditating, and singing obscene songs at the top of my lungs in the shower.
Hoping the new teaching experience is fulfilling and inspiring…..

Otter, Remerdre, CG..thanks…!
I want one of those shirts Otter! They do not learn it even in college!!
And Remerdre…I agree, if I was a drinker, some days I would be really loaded! Too bad, I love chips now instead! Another problem…!
CG:
It is my dear, it truly is, in spite of things like the above, it really fullfills me…
